If you’ve been following our social media for the past few months, you know that First Ascent Design’s co-founder, Pauline Rubin (that’s me!), has been working with a team of smart and talented women to bring a Girl Develop It chapter to Wilmington, Delaware.
For those of you are are not familiar with Girl Develop It (or GDI for short), it is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide affordable and judgement-free opportunities for women interested in learning web and software development, including classes and community events. GDI has over 58,000 members in 54 chapters across the country. And on Wednesday, October 21st, we brought that number to 55 with the launch of GDI Wilmington thanks to sponsorship from AT&T and 1313 Innovation.
We had an overwhelming turnout at our first event, with over 30 attendees. The women who attended ranged from complete beginners to seasoned programmers, encompassing a myriad of careers and experiences.
As a self-taught front-end developer, I know how hard learning to code is. I hope that GDI Wilmington will provide a community of encouragement and support to Delawarean women of all skills levels and backgrounds.
Keep an eye out for upcoming classes and social events on Meetup!
